What are Personality Disorders?

It is a mental disorder, where people who suffer, have a rigid and unhealty pattern of thinking, functioning and behaving.

Due to this unhealthy pattern of thinking, funtioning and behaving, people who suffer from personality disorders have a hard time perceiving and relating to situations and people. This translated into these people having troubles and limitations in relationships, social activities, work and school.

Clusters

Cluster A

The group of personality disorders under this cluster are characterized by odd or eccentric behaviors. The personality disorders that fit under this cluster are Paranoid Personality Disorder, Schizoid Personality Disorder, and Schizotypal Personality Disorder.

Cluster B

The group of personality disorders under this cluster are charaterized by dramatic, emotional or erratic behaviors. The personality disorders that fit under this cluster are Anti-social Personality Disorder, Borderline Personality Disorder, Histrionic Personality Disorder, and Narcissistic Personality Disorder.

Cluster C

The group of personality disorders under this cluster are charaterized by anxious or fearful behaviors. The personality disorder that fit under this cluster are Avoidant Personality Disorder, Dependent Personality Disorder, and Obsessive-Compulsive Personality Disorder.

Causes

Personality is combination of thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Since there are a lot of factors which can effect one's personality, at times it is hard to say what the cause of personality disorders is. Though it has been narrowed down to main causes:

Genes

There are certain personality traits, sometimes know as temperments, which can be passed on from partents. These traits make a person vulnerable to developing or directly cause development of a personality disorder.

Environment

There are many times that personality disoders can occur due to the environment the person grew up in, events that occurred, and relationships with family members and others. A common example of this is abuse.

Result of a Personality Disorder

Personality disorders can affect more people than the person that has is, and it can make it hard to live their lives.

Personality can have a major impact on relationships, as it can be hard for these people to connect with others. It can also bring diffuclties in school or work. Personality disorders often causes social isolation, or alcohol/drug abuse.
